Themes: what they are and how they’re made
How reflections become group theme labels, and why you’ll never see anyone’s words.
How it works
Themes are short labels for what people are reflecting on, such as feeling apart from others. They let you see what’s on a group’s mind without anyone’s words.
When someone saves a reflection in the app, a third-party AI, Anthropic, picks one to three themes from a fixed list of 52. Anything not on the list is dropped. nørma rewords each theme into a label for leaders and counts it for the person’s team and the groups above it. Only the top few per group are shown.
Step by step
- Open Themes and choose your scope.
- Read “What’s going well” and “What needs support”.
- Use “Where themes are building” to see which groups below yours a theme is building in, from “a few” to “many”, this month or against the last 3 months.
- Pick one theme to talk about with your team, as a group.
Good to know
You never see anyone’s words or name, or how many people raised a theme.
Seven sensitive themes never reach the dashboard, and reflections that suggest someone may be at risk add no themes.
Themes follow your organisation’s minimum group size, which counts members, not people who wrote. In a small team a theme can still come from one person, and it could be yours.
The AI processes reflections outside Australia, without the person’s name.
Never ask who raised a theme.
Group figures only, never a person’s answers. Groups below your organisation’s minimum never show, and in a small group a figure can rest on one answer.
